Description

A Hidden Gem of Speyside, Transformed by the Influence of Islay

Nestled in the heart of Rothes, Speyside, Glen Spey Distillery is a name that rarely graces the spotlight—yet it holds a fascinating legacy. Originally established in 1878 as the Mill of Rothes, this distillery was first a corn mill before transforming into a whisky-making powerhouse. Unlike its more famous Speyside counterparts, Glen Spey has long remained an unsung hero, with most of its production quietly feeding the blends of Johnnie Walker rather than standing alone as a single malt.

Yet, when given the chance to shine in its own right, Glen Spey reveals a remarkably delicate spirit, known for its light, grassy, and slightly nutty profile—an ideal canvas for an adventurous cask finish. This 16-year-old expression takes that elegance and pushes it into uncharted territory, thanks to a bold maturation in an Ex-Laphroaig Pedro Ximénez Hogshead. This marriage of Speyside refinement with the smoky, medicinal punch of Laphroaig and the luscious sweetness of PX sherry creates a whisky that is both unexpected and unforgettable.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: The aroma opens with the juicy familiarity of stewed apples and crushed pears. The influence of the peated cask introduces intriguing notes of smoked mackerel and game meat, accompanied by hints of burning heather and gorse. As it develops, the sweet apples evolve into scorched fruit, presented on salty driftwood beside anchovies in oil.

Palate: On the palate, a remarkable dichotomy unfolds. Fragrant fruits intertwine with pine needles and earthy peat. Smoked duck emerges, adding to the intrigue, before fading into nuances of iodine and seaweed on the finish.

A true Speyside anomaly, this Glen Spey offers a rare glimpse into the distillery’s hidden potential, elevated by a cask choice that defies tradition.
