he cask was filled on 14 October 1996, barely a year after Lochranza’s copper stills first ran, when every drop was an experiment in reviving legal distilling on Arran after more than a century of silence. For almost three decades the butt rested in sight of the Kilbrannan Sound, its staves trading Oloroso-soaked spices and baked-fruit sweetness for layers of oak polish and gentle rancio. Lift the glass and the nose serves hot apple pie cooling on a windowsill, whipped cream flecked with vanilla, a whiff of polished furniture and the faint salt spray that drifts in from the pier. The palate starts malt-loaf sweet, moves into soft strudel, figs and honeyed walnuts, then coasts out on balanced oak, dried fruit and a buttery pastry note that refuses to fade. Nothing has been added or taken away: the colour is cask-born, the texture un-chill-filtered, the strength exactly as time left it.
There is older Arran bottling out there —the “Whisky Is The Limit” edition on our shelves is the current senior—but this 27-year-old approachable whisky captures the distillery’s pioneering spirit: early-days malt, quietly maturing while golden eagles nested above the stillhouse and a lone road wound its way to Lochranza. Pour a measure, let the air tease out the pastry notes, and taste how boldly those first casks now speak.
