7th of December 2010 saw a fresh rum barrel rolled into a sea-licked warehouse a few strides from Tobermory’s brightly painted harbour. For thirteen winters Mull’s salt wind threaded its way through the vents while the Caribbean oak bled molasses, brown sugar and toasted-stave char into the distillery’s muscular spirit. Crack the cork today and the first aromas are pineapple pulp and mango coulis, laced with coconut shavings, caramel fudge and the soft curl of camp-fire embers; it’s the scent of grilled fruit skewers over driftwood at low tide. A sip starts glossy and sweet—runny demerara syrup, vanilla cream—then unfurls chocolate-coated walnuts, ripe stone-fruit and that signature harbour tang before settling into a malty, gently smoky finish dusted with heather ash.
Tobermory is famous for shifting between its bright, fruity house style and the peat-laden alter-ego bottled as Ledaig. This cask falls somewhere in between: not an Islay-level peat bomb, yet shot through with enough bonfire glow to remind you the sea is never far away.
