Perched on the wave-lashed north coast of Islay, Bunnahabhain spent the first eighty years of its life reachable only by sea; the single-track road didn’t arrive until 1960, so the warehouses still breathe salt spray straight off the Sound of Islay. The cask in question—an ex-Oloroso hogshead filled on 24 May 2018 and emptied on 16 February 2024—layered cooked apple, malt-loaf richness and cola-sweet fudge over the whisky’s coastal core. First nosing is all warm apple pie by the pier; a sip delivers ripe stone-fruit and malty depth, then the finish rolls on with syrupy dried fruit and a last lick of sea salt. Nothing is added, nothing taken away: the colour is cask-born and the texture un-chill-filtered.
