Braeval was built by Chivas Brothers in 1973 on a mountain ridge at Chapeltown in Banffshire — at 350 metres, Scotland's highest distillery. Its purpose from the start was supplying malt for Chivas Regal, and most of its production still disappears into blends today. The distillery was mothballed in October 2002 and lay silent until July 2008; this cask was distilled on 25 February 2000, just two and a half years before the gates closed, and spent part of its long maturation in that silent warehouse.
Twenty-four years in a Hogshead drew out a beautifully elegant Speyside character. The nose offers fresh cut pears and almond pastry with a hint of cherry. The palate layers baklava, apple crumble and almonds. The finish is long and floral — honeysuckle and honey nut sweetness lingering well.
Cask 8445. 167 bottles. 50.9% ABV, natural colour, non-chill filtered.
